The cost of these three components adds up to $3, compared to $1.2 for the iPhone 4S. Another surprising finding is that Apple may replace its current SAW filter with a film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) in the new iPhone. Recent breakthroughs in the manufacturing technology of thin-film bulk acoustic resonators have reduced the size of components and improved work efficiency, and have become the first choice for smart phone manufacturers. Avago Technologies may also become a supplier of RF filters to the iPhone. The company has recently significantly increased the production capacity of thin film bulk acoustic resonators and invested tens of millions of dollars in this field. With the new thin-film bulk acoustic resonator, the new iPhone costs $3 to build the component, compared to the $4.25 cost of the iPhone 4S.
